How do life coach training courses affect the personal life of the coach?

The decision to become a professional life coach is far more than just a career or business decision. It is not so much about what you want to do as it is about the kind of person you choose to be. While it may be possible to take life coach courses and gain a coaching certificate by studying theory and practising coaching techniques, you will not be equipped to develop the being (or Be-ing) of another person if you fail to engage with the work of developing your own Be-ing.

An effective coach training course will confront you with previously hidden aspects of your Self and challenge you to become fully aware of who you are, how you perceive life and how you operate. Completing this type of life coaching program demands commitment to levels of honesty and integrity that will inevitably be uncomfortable at times - and will lead to powerful breakthroughs in your own life, along with stronger leadership skills and a clearer sense of purpose.

You may have heard the story about Mahatma Gandhi and the sugar:

A mother, concerned that her young son was eating too much sugar, brought him to Gandhi to ask the wise man to correct the boy's behaviour. Gandhi listened carefully, pondered for a moment and said to the woman, "Please bring your son back in a fortnight's time - I will talk to him then." The woman was puzzled, but did as she was told. When she returned, she asked Gandhi again, "Please tell my son to stop eating sugar. It is not good for him." Gandhi looked at the boy and said, "Stop eating sugar. It is not good for you." The child, who had great respect for the Mahatma, agreed at once. The woman returned a few weeks later to report that her son had indeed given up sugar. "But why," she asked, "could you not simply have told him to stop the first time we visited?"

"Ah, you see," said the wise leader, "at that time I myself was eating sugar."

Elsewhere, Gandhi expressed this teaching in words: "Be the change you want to see in the world." Many have repeated that catch phrase, even made it their slogan. How many have taken it to the level of their being that? Another way of looking at this would be to ask how you could be a French teacher if you can't speak French? Good coach training courses - whether for life coaching, corporate or executive coaching - will work at that level.

Our actions spring not so much from our convictions as from our Be-ing. If behaviour says "Do as I say - not as I do", can a coach presume to bring others into action of their life's goals or dreams? The best life coaching courses will produce coaches whose own lives reveal the transformation that is possible when ordinary humans gain access to their hidden potential and resources to create what they wish for. Such life coaches can awaken in their clients then the ability to develop not only their thinking or their behaviour, but the power for them being that which they wish to become. A star performer, a top executive or a powerful teacher.
