HARNESSING STRESS FOR GROWTH

Is it possible to harness stress in support of personal growth? We believe so.
It is said that some stress is good, that it gets us into action. And yet it's a very very fine line isn't it. Stop. Before you read on, take a long deep breath in through your nose and then let it go. And again. Breathe in through your nose, more, more, a little more, all the way into the very pit of the bottom of the lung, feel your tummy stretch out... and... let go. Woosh. (Hear it? The sound of release.) Now, sit up straight and drop your shoulders away from the base of your skull. Did you even notice that your shoulders were hunched?
Do you see how the "view" is better when you're a little more relaxed? The key is that sometimes it is our relationship to a situation that needs to change, not necessarily the situation.
"Stress was originally designed by the body as a healthy and necessary survival response to a threatening scenario" says Marc Steinberg, in the opening section of the workshop notes. A blast of adrenaline would create an instant boost of physical strength and mental alertness - enabling our hunting ancestors to leap up a tree when chased by a rhino. And when the rhino had eventually got bored and wandered off, the hunter, having caught his breath while gazing at the view, would scamper down and lope home to tell the story around the campfire that night.
Women experience far higher levels of stress than men and are more likely to report the physical symptoms of stress such as fatigue, irritability and headaches, however we all feel stressed from time to time. Who doesn't feel overwhelmed from time to time? Who experiences a gradually increasing loss of fun and motivation? Who feels overworked? Did you mentally raise your hand to any of the above?
